Senior Talks: Film Screening of The Pharaohs

Issues in Senior Group Living

Saturday May 11 | 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Details

The Pharaohs is a short film that uses humor and drama to depict some real-life issues facing seniors today. Inspired by a true story, the film traces one woman’s journey as she struggles with acceptance in and adjustment to a communal living situation. Along the way, she encounters peer pressure, social isolation, bullying, rejection, loss, misunderstanding and poor communication between herself and staff, as well as her family.

Following the movie, a panel discussion will address issues raised in the film, as well as the role of family dynamics in adjusting to life changes, effective communication techniques, and systemic issues regarding placement of seniors in communal living situations.

Presenters:

David Malouf, the writer director of The Pharaohs, devoted his professional career to a special population at the other end of life—children with disabilities. He held special education positions in public schools, university and federal government settings. He had recently broadened his focus to include incarcerated individuals, diverse cultures and the growing senior population in this country. His short screenplay entitled The Battle of Xa Hoa Chau addressed the contemporary cultural gulf between America and Vietnam and was selected as a finalist in the 2016 DC Shorts screening competition. The following year, his screenplay for The Pharaohs won that competition and was made into a movie in 2018. The Pharaohs is currently in festival circulation and is also available for training and informational purposes.
